Bismillahir rahmanir rahmeem
Whether you’re Christian or Muslim, you should know the story of Dawud (as) (David) and Jalut (Goliath). The little man overcoming the big. Dawud (as) could not have overcome Jalut without the help of Allah swt and by reading his story, we’ll find out how.
Bani Israel (the people of Israel) were fighting one of the pagan tribes at the time, the Philistines. The army of Bani Israel was being led by Talut (Saul) and the army of the Philistines was led by Jalut (Goliath) who struck fear into the hearts of Bani Israel. With him, the Philistines thought they were invincible.
Jalut challenged them to a one on one combat before battle, this was a popular custom. None of the warriors of Bani Israel came forward even when Talut offered the hand of his beautiful daughter in marriage.
Dawud (as) took upon the challenge of Jalut. At the time he was only a youth subhanAllah. He didn’t wear the clothes of combat, he only had pebbles and a sling. Jalut taunted and mocked Dawud (as) but he responded with such beautiful words. “I face you in the name of Allah, the Lord of the Israelites, Whose laws you have mocked. Today you will see that it is not the sword that kills but the will and power of Allah.”
How many of us would be this brave? So many times we as Muslims are called to defend Islam as a peaceful religion and so many shrink from this responsibility. There’s so much we could be doing like Meet Your Muslim Neighbour sessions, inviting your neighbour round for iftaar or sending them a small Eid gift as a token of your appreciation. These things may seem small to us but in the eyes of Allah swt they are big inshaAllah.
He swung his sling with a pebble aimed right at Jalut’s head and killed him.
“and Allah gave him the kingship and prophethood and taught him from that which He willed.” [Surah Baqarah: 251]
Allah swt blessed Dawud (as) with many miracles. He could understand the animals, he had an extremely beautiful voice, mountains and birds joined him in the worship of Allah swt and Allah bestowed upon him wisdom. SubhanAllah!
Dawaud (as) really is a great example of tawakkul over might. The Philistines really thought they could conquer all with Jalut but without the help of Allah swt they were like sitting ducks.
A famous jurist said “What has he found who has lost God? And what has he lost who has found God?”
We see this in the story of Dawud (as), without Allah swt, we will never be successful.
